Detective Inspector Frank Cornish of the local police begins to investigate the case, learning that the drug had been in a daiquiri given to her by Marina after she spilled her own drink. When Mrs Bantry recounts the events to Miss Marple, she uses lines from the poem "The Lady of Shalott" (in which a curse falls upon the poem's heroine) to describe the look she observed on Marina's face. A short while later, Heather collapses and dies. Mrs Bantry, standing nearby, notices a strange look cross Marina's face during Heather's monologue. Heather had been ill but was such a big fan of Marina that she left her sickbed to meet her favourite star and get her autograph. Heather corners Marina and launches into a long story about how they met years ago while Marina was visiting Bermuda, where Heather worked. Guests include Mrs Bantry, actress Lola Brewster, Marina's friend Ardwyck Fenn, and Heather with her husband Arthur. Marina and her latest husband, film producer Jason Rudd, host a fĂȘte in honour of St John Ambulance. Over tea, Heather tells Miss Marple how she met American actress Marina Gregg, who recently moved into the area and bought Gossington Hall from Miss Marple's friend Dolly Bantry. She is helped by Heather Badcock, who brings her into her own home to rest. Miss Marple goes back to St Mary Mead and there finds a letter from Gladys which contains the damning evidence which Inspector Neele needs to bring the killer to justice. The episode ends the same way as the original novel. In the book these interviews were done by Inspector Neele. She visits Mrs Mackenzie to learn about the history between her late husband and Rex Fortesque. Miss Marple plays a larger role in the episode than in the book. The discovery of the body of Gladys is now made by Mrs Crump instead of Ellen. The character of the housemaid Ellen Curtis is also deleted.The revelations by Miss Ramsbottom about the Blackbird Mine now come from Crump while drunk and also from Lance. The character of Miss Ramsbottom is deleted.The episode is highly faithful to the plot of the original with only a few minor changes. (may contain spoilers - click on expand to read) She soon learns that the elder Fortescue had received veiled threats for some time and that they might have something to do with a long ago business deal that made his initial fortune. Miss Marple takes a particular interest in the case when her former maid Gladys, now working in the Fortescue household, is also murdered. He suddenly appears soon after his father's death claiming that they had reconciled and been invited by him to return to England with an offer to rejoin the firm. Another son, Lance, had a falling out with his father many years before and relocated to East Africa. His son Percival, a partner in the family firm, was a disappointment to him and a daughter, Elaine, hasn't amounted to much. He was married to a much younger wife, who now stands to inherit. When Rex Fortescue dies while sitting at his desk in the City, it's determined that he was in fact poisoned.
